Straight in off the leftfield with a lolloping, quirky, bass-ravaged groove, 'Vowels' fully fixes our focus on the humanized vocal rhythmic shots that weave, bob, twist and writhe around the loose, swaggering drums and rump-shaking subs. Gradually building in momentum, there's an infectiousness here that doesn't quit until the final a, e, i, o and indeed u slurs and croaks out of the speakers. Having already impressed with his releases for More Music and Moda Black, 2013 also saw Baunz lend his remix talents to the Maya Jane Coles produced 'Suspicious Heart' on 2020Vision and rework pop favourites Rudimental. His Pets debut, Out Of The Window, rolls outs its sleazy slappin' bassline matching it brilliantly to the spoken vocal from 3rd Eye. Written under Thomass alter-ego Elektrochemie LK, the original (released in 1996), was a wonderfully crude sonic scud missile that informed and influenced techno artists on both sides of the Atlantic. Spitfire tempo a-go-go, it embodies the very spirit of the term funky techno thanks its fine balance of snub-nosed grit and demonstratively outlandish bassline. Always inspired by this epic floor-slammer, Greg and Voitek had been toying with the idea of creating a respectful edit. Then, thanks to a chance backstage encounter, their dream of paying it the ultimate homage with an official remix was realised earlier this year. It turns out Thomas is just as much of a fan of Catz N Dogz are they are of him so he unearthed the old dusty DAT tape and told them to do their best. Naturally the duo have stepped up in every way. The nagging vocal loop leads the charge as a soft kick drum sets the drive. Cue hand claps, cue off-beat snare hits, cue bold splashing hi-hats. A bombardment of the senses ensues as one of Catz N Dogz juiciest ever basslines thunders its way into the mix along with classic detuned synth stabs and more iconic vocal loops. With lightning strike build-ups, fluctuating frequency textures and a groove thats so powerful it could feed a family of four for an entire month, it doesnt just pay Thomass original respect but showcases Catz N Dogz at their funkiest and most creative. And what a release it is Two smouldering slabs of unyielding house music that shimmy and shake with muscular musicality, theres universal appeal as the Retrofit label boss references the rich heritage of Detroit, Berlin and New York with consummate ease. High Way takes the lead: A linear synth riff morphs back and forth with a techno-like insistency while a tightly clipped vocal sample creates the perfect balance with euphoric soul. These seemingly contrasting elements are tied together by a thick, sweet syrup like bassline underbelly. The end result? A bulbous late night strut-out that defies any formal categorisations. Polish duo Chmara Winter have become known for their intricate productions and work with audio textures that impress and delight in equal measure. Kris & Bart's tracks have been entrusted to the care of HNNY & Danny who turn in two very contrasting reworks. Studio Barnhaus artist HNNY takes the reigns on Kings Of Zenon and treats us to a wonderfully low slung, mesmeric groove. Stabbing rhodes riffs are joined by a pained flute and erratic popping synths, whilst the breathy vocal floats beneath. Quite the concoction but each ingredient is mixed to perfection by the Swedish producer to create the most delicious of dishes. The laid back daytime vibe of the A side is countered by the Danny Daze remix of Pushcan. Pets Recordings now look to soundtrack the summer with their latest V/A collection, 'Home Is Where The Pool Is'. Ice-cool and sun-tinged is the order of the day with this new four track ep and its two Pets debutants that lead the way. Whether you're a frequent visitor or a virgin to the West Coast city, it's imperative to call on him for an in-the-know tour of the City's finest spots. Apart from underground SF expeditions, Baytala's legacy comprises some of the most kinetic and dynamic club tracks ever released, an eclectic record collection so big it requires its own postcode and a vintage car and bike collection nicely referenced in the artwork for his first release on Pets Recordings. The Nikola Baytala EP sees Baytala explore his far reaching influences with the help of Myles Egner (with label bosses, Catz N Dogz, and fellow San Franciscans, Pillow Talk, on remix duties.) Opening track, Zero $ carves out a chugging 4x4 beat that soon becomes overrun with dark and dischordant synth tones and a stripped back bass line that buzzes with reverb. Christian's musical influences took hold from a very early age. "Technicality" was the forward thinking DnB club night that paid homage to the famous Metalheadz Blu Note parties and it was here, alongside other regulars including Ben UFO, Fold and Breakage that Christian furthered his love of bass driven music. Having released his debut 12" at the tender age of 17, A1 Bassline has worked on and sought for a sound that he is content with.
